For many Dreyfoos students, their art major is just one of the areas in which they succeed. Dreyfoos senior Nolan Mallet plays alto saxophone in the Wind Ensemble and was selected to perform at the opening ceremonies of the All-State Band Festival. He is also a championship diver who began diving at the age of 7. When Nolan isn’t rehearsing or playing his saxophone, he is spending countless hours at the pool practicing his diving, and it has paid off. Nolan recently finished 2nd in the Class 2A diving FHSAA Championships.

“As the state meet approached, my practices in Coral Springs turned into mock dive meets ... I would go through all my dives in order and my coaches would announce and score the dives. When the Championships came around, I felt like it was just another practice with my teammates.”

Last school year, Nolan began sending videos of his dives to college coaches. “A few of the coaches emailed me back and offered me a recruiting trip to visit the school and meet the team. After I went on the trips I talked to the coaches to see what they could offer me and I then decided to go to Georgia Tech.”

After Nolan committed to Georgia Tech, the head diving coach, John Ames, said that the addition of Nolan to the diving team “will give us one of the strongest diving programs that Tech has ever seen. I am extremely excited about the next couple of years.”

Nolan plans to study Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech, and although his athletic obligations will keep him from participating in any music ensembles, he hopes to continue playing the sax and teaching lessons to beginners. He believes that Dreyfoos not only offered him a great education in the arts, but that “Dreyfoos has such a unique and competitive student body that pushes people to be the best that they can be academically and artistically.”
