If you have seen a Dreyfoos dance performance in the past 3 years, you have certainly noticed Darius Hickman. A rising senior in the Dance department, Darius’ talent has been evident since he began here his freshman year.
Darius first started dancing in 6th grade at the Florida School for Dance Education. While attending Dreyfoos, Darius has studied at two summer intensives: Orlando Ballet and the Harid Conservatory. Through these experiences, Darius says “I have gained knowledge on how to work with all difference personalities and have learned how to take constructive criticism from all the teachers I've worked with.”
This summer, Darius has the opportunity to attend Next Generation Ballet’s summer program for five weeks in Tampa, Florida. This highly regarded program has accepted Darius into the senior division, the highest division possible. In addition to the summer program, Darius has been offered the chance to attend Next Generation Ballet year round. This intensive training program is considered a stepping stone towards a professional dance company.
“Dreyfoos has fostered my ability to become a stronger dancer as well as a strong and independent academic student. The environment that this school has provided me the past 3 years is indescribable. Having the opportunity to work with students from other art areas and being able to artistically collaborate at such a young age is truly a privilege.”
When Darius is not performing, rehearsing, and striving to be a professional dancer, he enjoys teaching children dance. He is an instructor at Char-Mar School of Dance in Advanced Contemporary and Acro.
Darius’ goal is to land a spot with a professional dance company, and knows that he will have to make that his first priority. “I plan on auditioning for professional dance companies considering a dancers life is a very short one. After I finish my career as a professional dancer I will then attend college. I am very interested in Pace University, SUNY Purchase, and University of Southern California.” Afterwards, he hopes to open a dance studio to provide young children the opportunity to dance.
Although Darius is still undecided about whether or not he will stay at Dreyfoos next year, or join Next Generation Ballet to expedite his dance career, we know his future is bright.
“Dreyfoos is a community that can aid young students in their development as artists. I am truly grateful to be able work with students from all other art areas on a da ily basis. This school is a place I can call home.”
