On Sept. 27th, the Piano Department presented their Impromptu concert in the Brandt Black Box Theater. Before entering the theater, two large signs were stationed at the door to showcase the list of all 40 different performances put on by students.
Unlike more formal piano concerts, Impromptu allows students to use their creativity to perform popular pop music compositions, such as “Pink + White” by Frank Ocean and “Killing me Softly” by the Fugees, while wearing outfits correlated to their selected pieces. Piano Senior Vania Montoya and Strings Senior Alani Ritter were one of the many groups that performed, and showed their creativity by planning similar outfits adorned with pink glitter to represent their piece, “Lover” by Taylor Swift.
“Honestly, getting ready for it is the most exciting part for me,” Montoya said. “There's something fun (about) getting all dressed up, especially for a concert like impromptu.”
Because of the unconventional nature of Impromptu concerts, audience members like communications junior Belen Rivera were able to appreciate different aspects of the piano department.
“This was my first Impromptu night (I have been to) and I loved it,” Rivera said. “I didn’t know what to expect with each new performance and I really loved the wide variety of songs they played. It was also cool being able to see my friends play and showcase the pieces that they worked hard on. I really think it is a concert that anyone could enjoy, and I'll definitely be back next year.”
