Back In Season
Prism, a concert combining talents from across the music department, returned after a pandemic disrupted year
The anticipated event, composed of classic holiday songs, presents boarding the stage of Dreyfoos Hall, and even appearances from the Grinch, is back.
Prism, an event held each year to celebrate the arrival of the holiday season through performances from the music department, was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. However, with classrooms filled and activity returned to campus, Prism has returned.
“I’m really excited to have Prism again because it’s this huge tradition that was interrupted,” band junior Bobbi Zimmelman said. “It feels great that we have it back again this year.”
Throughout the event, there are numerous small group performances that require auditions since limited spots are available. Auditions were held on Sept. 20 and 21 in the band room where students performed in front of a panel of music deans and teachers. Vocal juniors Layton Fernsell, Sophie Michaelis, Madison Silver, and Gabriella Hernandez were selected to perform during the pre-show.
“I’m looking forward to making more memories with my friends and the whole experience of it all since the first and only time I did it was in freshman year,” Fernsell said. “It’s really exciting to have a more prominent role in Prism now that I’m a junior. I can’t wait to experience that.”
Students utilized the practice rooms in Building 7 to prepare for Prism, which was held in Dreyfoos Hall at the Kravis Center. Members from the vocal, piano, strings, and band performances practiced during lunch, classes, and outside of school to rehearse and perfect their pieces. The music faculty also set up rehearsals scheduled for every other Monday.
“My favorite part of Prism is the open dress rehearsal where all the Dreyfoos students come over and watch,” vocal senior Lillian Critchett said. “I’m performing with three choruses, the large department mass pieces, and a small group. That’s about eight songs total.”
The final performance was Nov. 30. Anticipation amongst the music department was high, allowing all areas of the department to unite for a joint cause.
“It feels amazing having Prism again,” band senior Reymon Contrera said. “Not being able to have it last year didn’t complete the holiday feeling. Prism includes music, joy, and laughter, and that is what brings the start of the holiday season."
