Dreyfoos Student Attends Meadowmount Summer Program

This summer Ericsson Hatfield, a junior in the Orchestra, attended the Meadowmount School of Music summer program. This experience would not have been possible without the generous support of Mrs. Benenson and the Benenson Scholarship Fund. Ericsson has been awarded the Benenson Scholarship for the past two summers.

Ericsson Hatfield wrote about his summer program:

This summer I was extremely fortunate to attend the Meadowmount School of Music in upstate New York. Meadowmout is one of the most prodigious music programs for violinists, cellists and pianist. Teachers from Juilliard such as Ann Setzer and Sally Thomas (one of the great pedagogues of the modern violin technique) dedicate their entire summer to this school. Meadowmount was founded by Ivan Galamian in 1944. Galamian is considered one of the greatest violin teachers of the century.  Notable Alumni who credit Meadowmount for having a profound effect on their musical lives include Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Pinchas Zukerman, James Ehnes, Lynn Harrell, Itzahk Perlman and many other international performers. Because of the legendary teachers and students at Meadowmout, the school has become one of the most respected music institutions in the world.  Meadowmount has attracted the attention of legendary teachers and performers such as William van der Sloot, Lynn Harrell and Joseph Silverstein of the Curtis Institute. I myself had the great opportunity to study under the tutelage of Sally Thomas, Ann Setzer, and attended master classes given by Silverstein, Ehnes and van der Sloot.

The degree of professionalism, artistry, discipline and talent is unparalleled. Student performances beyond that of professionals in skill and artistry were given three nights a week.  It seems unbelievable when reading it in ink, it is truly something that must be seen to be believed. Looking back, I believe I made more than a month's worth of progress each week while I was at Meadowmount.  I have gained a profound sense of artistry, a deeper understanding of violin technique and have become part of a close community of musicians. The music world is small, and it will be a great privilege to personally know my dorm mates when they go on to be world renowned soloists and orchestral musicians. Meadowmount is truly a magical oasis for musicians looking to make a profound effect in their musical lives. My thanks to Ms. Benenson for making this amazing experience possible for me.
