Nicholas Garlo

Nicholas Garlo a senior Dance major at Dreyfoos has high aspirations for his dance career, a dream just last year he thought might be impossible.  Nick started taking gymnastics at a young age then Nick gained acceptance into Bak Middle School of the Arts and started building skills in all forms of dance.  It wasn’t until the summer before his freshman year at Dreyfoos that he began taking ballet seriously.

Last year Nick was diagnosed with cancer, after testing it turned out to be benign; however this experience had a profound change on his life-view and feelings about dance.  It allowed him to “break down a barrier on stage, express himself more freely and be more passionate about dance”.  In addition to his cancer scare Nick has scoliosis and was told he would not be able to dance long term, so far it has not been a problem.  With all the challenges Nick has faced he continues to excel in his studies and keep positive.

While Mr. Garlo is most often dancing classical ballet he feels more connected to contemporary ballet because it is “less restrictive”.  Nick is very excited about the piece he is working on for the Winter Dance Concert with guest artist Jennifer Archibald.  He explains, “It is a contemporary piece with a little hip-hop mixed in, it might be my favorite piece I have done here; all the pieces choreographed by our guest artists are going to be great!”

When asked about what his time at Dreyfoos has meant Nick remarked, “Dreyfoos is an accepting environment where students are supportive of each other while also challenging them to do better”. Nick is a top student and went on to say, “Dreyfoos provides an amazing opportunity to excel in academics, it is fast paced and creates this great pressure to succeed, and it is one of the top schools academically in the area!”

Nicholas has attended extensive summer programs; he spent two summers at the Joffrey Summer Dance Intensive in Chicago where they asked him to stay on as a full time student.  Nick made the tough decision to stay in Florida and finish high school.  This past summer Nick attended The Juilliard School in NYC and is applying there for college. In addition to Julliard nick is applying to SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance, Indiana University and he has already been accepted to Florida State University.  After college Nick aspires to dance in the Joffrey Ballet Company.
